This post showed up in my feed reader today and what struck me about it was how Google has emerged as both a corporate force to be reckoned with as well as a cultural ambassador. Its power to inform, persuade, and, in this case, save, people is clearly something that is unprecedented (save, perhaps, the Bible or the Quran). From a policy perspective, it would be interesting to hear more about how decisions to alter search results like this are made at Google.

South African artist William Kentridge is probably best known for his animations made by photographing a charcoal drawing and then erasing and redrawing portions to make each subsequent frame. His films deal with political and social topics such as apartheid, mining, and power dynamics in his native Johannesburg to very personal themes around success, sensuality, and death.

Here’s his fourth film Sobriety, Obesity & growing old from 1991.
