Life by Caffeine... Death by Caffeine?

More than 500 billion cups of coffee are served worldwide each year.

An acre of coffee trees can produce up to 10,000 pounds of coffee cherries. That amounts to approximately 2,000 pounds of beans after hulling or milling.

Americans consume 400 million cups of coffee per day, equivalent to 146 Billion cups of coffee per year; making the United States the leading consumer of coffee in the world.

Germany is the world's second largest consumer of coffee in terms of volume at 16 pounds per person.

On average, U.S. coffee drinkers consume three and a half cups a day per person.

Considering caffeinated coffee consumption alone, it was no surprise that Seattle ranks No. 1 nationwide.

Do a search for Starbucks locations in Seattle you get 1,715 locations.

Despite the unbelievable and unparalleled volume of Starbucks brewed in the city, Design Commission’s espresso of choice is Nespresso – “With exquisite crema, tantalizing aroma and full-bodied taste.”

1 Nespresso capsule produces 40 milliliters of espresso coffee...

DC consumes an average of 10 capsules a day, 100 per week. In a, shall we say, "normal" month DC consumes 400 Nespresso capsules, a steamy 16,000 milliliters of straight espresso. That's 541.02436 fluid ounces or 16 liters, equivalent to 4.22 Gallons.

In keeping with the shock-factor-digits lets do the math on caffeine intake: In a single espresso (1oz) there are 40 milligrams of caffeine. So, at 400 capsules a month dedicated to our lifesaving coffee dose, DC's (all seven of us. ahhem) gets 16,000 milligrams of caffeine pumping through our jugulars a month. Translation: 16 grams... not a lot of caffeine?

In a two month period (60 days), the staff of Design Commission drinks enough coffee to kill a horse. Yes. literally. 886.36 shots of Espresso + horsey = Death.

The good news? All this caffeine fuels some terrific work!

About Us

DC Loves
A few things we've been into lately.

Parker: Faking your own death takes a lot of planning, care and closemouthedness.  Suicide can be faked most easily; for example by leaving a suicide note, and jumping off a bridge and not resurfacing while making sure there are plenty of witnesses around to see you.  Accident is more difficult because you need to lead people to the conclusion that you are dead without actually producing a body.  Incidentally, it's relatively easy to bribe an official in Haiti to draw you up a death certificate. About 500$ USD. So if you really want to get this done with, go on vacation, have too good of a time, come back dead and less $500 bucks.
Piece of cake.
